The patient is put into the Biering-Sorensen position in which the upper body is over the end of the table with the lower limbs secured so that they cannot lift off the table. While in this position the hands are placed on the opposite shoulder. For a young fit adult they should be able to hold it for 70-110.

The test begins with the patient in a sit up positions at about 60 degrees while resting against a bolster. Knees and hips are flexed at 90 degrees and the hands are placed on opposite shoulders. With another person holding the feet down, the bolster is moved away from the patient and the patient is required to hold the position as long as possible. For a young fit adult they should be able to hold it for 130-160

Also known as the side bridge test; the legs are placed extended with one foot placed in front of the other. The subject supports him/herself with one elbow and feet while lifting the hips off the table. The opposite arm is either resting on the side of the body or can be placed on the other shoulder without twisting the hips. For a young fit adult they should be able to hold it for 130-190

Functional Capacity Evaluation

As a student in the field it is important for you to know what to do in the case of encountering a patient with low back pain. Stuart McGill developed a three step test to evaluate lumbar function called the Lumbar Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE). These tests include a lateral musculature test, flexor musculature test, and a back extensor test. These tests have proven by Mr. Mcgill and Mr. Arnett to be invaluable as core endurance is a better predictor of low back pain in an individual rather than strength. In the clinical setting Mr. Arnett has performed many FCEs to evaluate a person's core endurance. â€‹

Back Extensor Test

Flexor Musculature Test

Lateral Musculature Test

Proper technique is very important when doing these test as improper technique will void the results or could injury the patient even more. A specialist will be next to the patient directing and educating on proper form.
